This moody Artist Point portrait session with Malea and James was full of mist, lantern light, playful energy, and everything that makes the Pacific Northwest feel so magical.

We began the evening around Heather Meadows and Picture Lake, where the rain cleared just long enough for us to wander and explore. By the time we reached the top near Artist Point, the mountains had completely disappeared into the mist. Instead of the clear sunset we had originally hoped for, we found ourselves in what can only be described as mood city.

The thick fog created the perfect setting to bring out the lanterns and experiment with something a little different. I have played with car headlights during sessions before, and this felt like the perfect opportunity to use Malea and James’s car lights to create dramatic, cinematic portraits in the mist. The result was romantic, adventurous, and so much fun to photograph.

Malea brought the most incredible energy to the entire evening. She was excited about every location, every idea, and every new thing we tried. Her enthusiasm was completely contagious and made me even more excited to keep creating. James was right there beside her, and the two of them were endlessly cute together.

Their dog, Cecil, also joined us for the adventure. He was an adorable model and remained very attached to his mom throughout the session. Whether we were walking through the mist or stopping for portraits, Cecil made sure he was never too far from Malea.

Malea and James have been married for two years, so this session was a chance to celebrate their anniversary and document this season of their life together. At the end of the night, Malea told me, “Sarah Jane, you made a dream of mine come true, and that was to get photos by Sarah Jane.”

I was completely over the moon. Although we did not get the clear Artist Point sunset she had dreamed about, we created something uniquely beautiful together. We will absolutely head back another time for that dreamy sunset, but this misty evening gave us an unforgettable anniversary session filled with laughter, creativity, and some of the moodiest portraits imaginable.
