This Sunrise Artist Point Portrait Session with Jessica and Matt meant a 2:30 a.m. alarm, a very early drive into the mountains, and one ridiculously beautiful morning at Mount Baker.

Jessica and Matt were visiting Washington from just outside Austin, Texas. They have been married for 15 years, have two kids together, and wanted portraits that created a chance to celebrate where they are now. Sunrise at Artist Point gave us exactly that.

We arrived while the moon was still out and hiked up before the sun started making its way over the mountains. The forecast had called for partly cloudy skies, but the morning started almost completely clear. Mount Baker caught a little alpenglow while we worked with lanterns in the early light, then clouds began moving around Mount Shuksan just as the sun was coming up.

For a few minutes, the light slipped perfectly between the mountainside and one funky little cloud hanging over Shuksan. It was one of those tiny windows where everything lines up and you just keep photographing until it disappears.

From there, we wandered through the meadows as the sunlight started spilling across the mountain. Jessica wore her cowboy boots the entire morning, which felt especially fitting for two Texans exploring Washington. Matt eventually threw on the ball cap he normally wears, and we took a few portraits around their truck with Mount Shuksan behind them. Jessica said that part simply felt like them, which was exactly the point.

We finished down at Picture Lake, where fog was slowly moving across the water beneath the mountain. The light was brighter by then, but the fog gave the whole area another completely different look before Jessica and Matt headed off to spend the rest of their day hiking.

It was also deceptively cold up there. The photos may look warm and glowy, but that wind was icy, and these two handled it like absolute champs.

After 15 years together, Jessica and Matt did not need a reason bigger than wanting beautiful photographs together. A freezing sunrise, cowboy boots, their truck, and Mount Shuksan showing off in the background felt pretty damn perfect.
